Khaleeji music — the traditional and contemporary musical traditions of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman and the UAE — represents one of the Arab world's most distinctive regional musical identities. Rooted in Bedouin oral poetry traditions, maritime culture and centuries of cultural exchange across the Arabian Peninsula and the wider Indian Ocean world, Khaleeji music has produced a body of recorded work that deserves to be heard on the best possible format.

The Khaleeji Sound — What Makes It Distinctive

Khaleeji music is characterised by the oud (العود) as lead instrument, the tabla and mirwas drums driving rhythmic patterns, and a vocal style that draws on traditional Bedouin poetic recitation. The melodic scales (maqamat) used in Khaleeji music are closely related to those of classical Arabic music but carry regional inflections — particularly the distinctive half-step intervals of the Gulf tradition.

On vinyl, the physical resonance of these acoustic instruments — the string buzz of the oud, the tonal complexity of hand-struck percussion, the room ambience of recordings made with live orchestras — is preserved in ways that digital compression reduces. Khaleeji vinyl sounds categorically better than Khaleeji streaming.

Khaleeji Music and Vinyl Culture in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia's vinyl revival has a particularly strong Khaleeji dimension. Collectors in Riyadh, Jeddah and the Eastern Province who grew up listening to Mohammed Abdo and Rashed Al-Majid on cassette are now seeking the same recordings on vinyl — discovering that the format they were born for sounds profoundly different when heard properly.
